Vitamin D Crucial to Activating Immune Defenses
Filed Under Natural Healing, Natural Solutions, Vitamin D | Leave a Comment
Scientists at the University of Copenhagen have discovered that Vitamin D is crucial to activating our immune defenses and that without sufficient intake of the vitamin, the killer cells of the immune system — T cells — will not be able to react to and fight off serious infections in the body.
For T cells to detect and kill foreign pathogens such as clumps of bacteria or viruses, the cells must first be ‘triggered’ into action and ‘transform’ from inactive and harmless immune cells into killer cells that are primed to seek out and destroy all traces of a foreign pathogen. Read more

Brain Amyloid Has Antibiotic Role in Alzheimer’s, Study Finds

Beta amyloid that builds up in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease may go along with beneficial antimicrobial activity, researchers said.
The findings from investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital raise the possibility that some cases of Alzheimer’s may stem from chronic, undetected brain infections. The results also cast doubt on the pharmaceutical industry’s efforts to find drugs to wipe out beta amyloid from the brain, one of the main methods now in development to fight the most common form of dementia in the elderly, the researchers said. Beta amyloid, or abeta, remains harmful in high concentrations, they said. Read more

When Sunny, a 3-year-old golden retriever, began working with school kids last spring, one of her first students was a fourth-grader with cerebral palsy – mobile only with the aid of a walker.
As soon as the youngster met Sunny, she was eager to take the dog for a walk, said Andrea Bazer, an adaptive physical education teacher. First with the help of her walker, then with Bazer’s help and finally, without any assistance, the youngster successfully took Sunny for a walk. Read more

It is already known that blueberries are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. New research from the Lund University Faculty of Engineering in Sweden shows that blueberry fibre are important and can alleviate and protect against intestinal inflammations, such as ulcerative colitis. The protective effect is even better if the blueberries are eaten together with probiotics.
The project originated as an attempt to see whether various types of dietary fibre and health-promoting bacteria, so-called probiotic bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria, can help alleviate and prevent the risk of ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer. Read more

DNA test ‘could predict most effective diet’
Filed Under Future of Food, Natural Healing, Nutrition | Leave a Comment
A simple DNA test may predict whether someone is more likely to lose weight on a low fat or a low carbohydrate diet, say US researchers.
The results from the small preliminary study of 101 women showed those on the best diet for their genes lost two to three times more weight than the rest.
The results are being presented at an American Heart Association conference.
Experts said the findings tied in with previous studies, but further work should be carried out. Read more

FOR a newcomer to the world of olive oil connoisseurship, the sound effects from the 20 or so tasters at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, Calif., were startling. The low murmurs of discussion were punctuated by loud, sharp slurps, and loud, sharp coughs. Slurps and coughs, hour after hour. On the second day I made two notes to myself: reread “The Magic Mountain”; check in with Dr. Beauchamp.
I was observing the annual Los Angeles international extra virgin olive oil competition, where nearly 400 oils from 15 countries were evaluated by expert judges last month. Through the three days of competition I learned what a wonderful variety of aromas you can discover in olive oils when you sip and slurp. (Vigorous slurping aerates the viscous oil and helps release its flavors.) Read more
