The latest data from the North Carolina website indicates the frequency of samples testing positive for H1N1 has risen to 25% (see Figure 2) from a low of 8% in December.  The frequency has not been at 25% since mid-November.  This clear upswing in H1N1 detection is consistent with recent comments on increases on college campuses in North Carolina and reports of more severe cases at UNC Medical Center at Chapel Hill.  This rise signals the start of wave three. U.S. health officials have asked parents to get their children under 10 years of age fully vaccinated against the A/H1N1 flu virus as another wave of strike might be coming soon.

Hawaii state health department said on Tuesday that, in Hawaii and a number of other states, there are many children who have not received their second dose, and that there are still many children who have not been vaccinated against the A/H1N1 at all. Read more

Doctors at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center are on high alert tonight after a spike in the number of children with flu-like symptoms. Right now, they believe all cases to be the novel H1N1 swine flu virus.

“Over the past 3 weeks or so, we’ve had about 17 or 18 admissions to Le Bonheur with confirmed influenza. I should say that we believe all or almost all of these will prove to be the novel H1N1 influenza virus.” Read more

The CDC Week 3 influenza report has been released and once again there were no reported cases of seasonal influenza A.  2 cases of influenza B were reported and the vast majority of cases (98%) were pandemic H1N1, indicating seasonal influenza A has been crowded out in the US.  The frequency of influenza detection has risen slightly and is at the highest level since week 50, signaling the end of the fall wave and the beginning of a winter wave.  However, although the detection rate rose slightly, the P&I deaths spiked higher and are now well above the epidemic threshold and as high as it has been since the peak of the 2008/2009 season. The World Health Organization on Monday slammed as “irresponsible” critics who claim swine flu is a fake pandemic created for the benefit of drug companies.

The U.N. health agency said the outbreak of a new strain of H1N1 influenza in North America last year had all the scientific characteristics of a pandemic, adding the WHO was never improperly influenced by the pharmaceutical industry that has benefited from huge government orders for vaccines and anti-viral drugs. A teenage girl left disabled by the swine flu treatment Tamiflu did not even have the virus, it was revealed today.

Samantha Millard, 19, became critically ill after suffering a severe allergic reaction to the tablets, which she took on the advice of the controversial NHS helpline.

WELLESLEY, Mass. —
Local school staffers who were supposed to be vaccinated against the H1N1 flu were mistakenly given a dose of insulin instead, NewsCenter 5 has learned.

NewsCenter 5’s Rhondella Richardson reported that several staffers at Wellesley’s Schofield School got insulin shots during a flu shot clinic at the school on Friday.

Somehow six staffers mistakenly received a shot of insulin, not the vaccine, the school said. Read more
