Mill Hill has released a new series of Ukraine sequences at GISAID.  The 12 Dnipropetrovsk HA sequences were from virus isolated from mammalian (MDCK) cells, while the 6 Cherkasy HA sequences were from virus grown in eggs.  The samples did not have demographic data, but were isolated in early November, when most fatal cases were in western Ukraine.

The sequences were similar to the nasal wash sequences released earlier.  Only one sample, A/Dnipropetrovsk/273?2009, had D225G (as a mixture with wild type), and were the same sub-clade seen in western Ukraine, bases on HA and NA markers.  The HA marker that was limited to Ternopil and Khmelmitski isolates in the earlier collections was found on a subset of Dnipropetrovsk and Cherkasy isolates.  The marker on one Ternopil isolate that was shared with New York isolates with D225N was also present in one of the Dnipropetrovsk sequences. The above update is from the Ukraine Ministry of Health.  The 24h increases included 22 more deaths and over100,000 new cases.  Much of the activity is in the eastern half of the country, with the biggest increases in cases, 6,563 to 343,583, and deaths 5 to 113 in Donetsk.  However, Kiev had a large increase in cases , 4,945 to 327,003 and deaths, 3 to 40), and there were another 4,355 new cases in the surrounding Kiev oblast (see updated map). The drug-resistant H1N1 virus mutation, identified as H274Y or H275Y is becoming more widespread, as reported by the CDC Week 48 H1N1 activity update. Identification of new cases of this Tamiflu-resistant swine flu strain has been increasing in recent weeks. At the same time, swine flu deaths have also been increasing, even as all other influenza activity indicators are decreasing. This may be the result of the combination of drug-resistant swine flu with the D225G H1N1 mutation which causes lung hemorrhaging.  Read more
